Percival Marcaida
If Poetry…
If Poetry had a face,
She would have green eyes,
To see beauty in everything,
Everyone: great and small.
If Poetry had locks of hair,
It would be something like auburn
Curled as if made of nature’s fiddled wood
Yet as soft as a wind’s whisper.
If Poetry had skin,
It would be tender and warm
To touch, yet strong enough
To not yield to bigotry’s pain.
If Poetry had a body,
It would be graceful
In its movements
Even when it falls.
If Poetry was a person,
It would be a young lady
In love with someone
She’ll never know.
Like a Butterfly
My eyes like a butterfly –
Will they get caught in your beautiful web?
The delicate patterns of your imperfect face,
I seem to remember only the tenderness
Of your freckled nape.
I wonder if your ears could swallow my words
And bury them deep in the pit of your heart’s mind.
For you did not say why you left me.
So I can only assume, guess at best
That you heard me whisper to leave
And see if I will follow,
Or meet you again by chance
Like a poetic prophecy of lost lovers’ fate.
But then, I decided to not follow
And rather wait to see if you would
Weaken into someone else’s arms.
Alas, how cruel instincts can be
To witness not how a doubting heart
Falls from a lovely flight
Into the begging hands of poverty.
I was caught in your beautiful web,
And never knew the pathetic venom within
Were planted by your doubting words.
Sad Heart
Sad heart
Heavy with a thought,
A thought you did not want to convey
And yet tears, they flowed
When I asked you yesterday.
Sad heart
Weighed down with a thought,
A thought you seemed to almost say.
And yet tears, they flowed
Again, not that I asked you today.
O my sad heart,
I am not so cold or without thought,
Why… why… did you not say?
And yet tears, they flowed
One last time as you walked away.
Your Lingering Kiss
our lingering kiss
is a memory
like that night we met
not knowing
if we’ll ever see
each other again
our tongues touching
you taste
like bubble gum
we suck each others breathe
you taste
like spearmint & nicotine
fading as you gasp
our tongues touching
you taste
like love
if love was ever tasted
instead of wasted
in an hour or two
our tongues touching
you taste
my lips as i taste yours
opening my eyes
to see yours closed
knowing as i held you
time will part us
perhaps forever
so i closed my eyes with you
sucking your warm breathe
the bravery and joy
you gave to me
will linger like your kiss
